On May 20, 2024, Deputy Secretary of State Kurt M. Campbell met with Brazilian Secretary General of the Ministry of External Relations Maria Laura da Rocha in Washington, D.C. The meeting was part of the semi-annual U.S.-Brazil High Level Dialogue.

According to Spokesperson Matthew Miller, the dialogue was particularly significant as it marked the 200th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two nations. Both Deputy Secretary Campbell and Secretary General da Rocha used this occasion to reaffirm the importance of their bilateral partnership in advancing shared regional and global priorities.

During the dialogue, Deputy Secretary Campbell discussed U.S. support for Brazil during its G20 presidency. He also expressed appreciation for Brazil's leadership in promoting democratic ideals, respect for human rights, climate action, and transition to clean energy within the region.

In addition to these discussions on diplomatic and political fronts, Deputy Secretary Campbell also addressed a recent natural disaster that had impacted southern Brazil. Expressing U.S. solidarity with those affected by severe flooding in the region, he announced an additional $800,000 in U.S. support through the United States Agency for International Development for Brazilian relief efforts. This latest contribution brings total US assistance for flood relief efforts in Brazil to $1,000,000.
