Washington, D.C. – TechNet, the national bipartisan network of innovation economy CEOs and senior executives, has sent a letter to Congress ahead of a House Energy and Commerce Committee Subcommittee on Communications and Technology hearing regarding the potential repeal of Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act.
The following statement can be attributed to TechNet President and CEO Linda Moore:
“Many of the technologies we love and use every day exist because Section 230 promoted the continued development of the Internet, which has been a driving force for innovation and economic growth in this country. It has helped companies reach customers across the globe, connected millions of Americans to jobs and new opportunities, enabled people of all backgrounds to learn, communicate, and access resources from anywhere, and spurred the innovation that is the hallmark of America’s competitiveness.
“Section 230 enables small and medium-sized businesses to grow and flourish online. It is a critical protection for the more than 85 percent of U.S. businesses with websites that rely on user-created content, including many small businesses that maintain an internet presence.
“Repealing Section 230 would lead to unintended consequences that would fundamentally change how we communicate and interact online. It would create a less safe user experience, especially for children and vulnerable communities, endanger free speech, and harm U.S innovation and economic growth.
“We urge Congress to avoid proposals that could jeopardize this vital law and reject efforts to eliminate Section 230 without a clear plan in place to mitigate the devastating consequences that repealing it would have on our economy.”
