Congresswoman Ashley Hinson (R-IA) stated that in the interest of "food security," individuals and entities associated with the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) should not be allowed to purchase agricultural land in the U.S. Hinson shared her statement in a May 29 post on X.
"Communist China shouldn't be allowed to buy another acre of American farmland, nor should we rely upon our top foreign adversary for key parts of our food supply chain," said Hinson. "Food security is national security!"
According to the Daily Mail, Hinson endorses a provision of the upcoming House "Farm Bill" that would restrict foreign actors from owning farmland. China purchasing land has been seen as a prominent issue in recent years. For example, in 2022, the Chinese company Fufeng Group obtained 300 acres of land in Grand Forks, 20 minutes down the road from the Grand Forks Air Force Base. The "Farm Bill" aims to reform the Agricultural Foreign Investment Disclosure Act (AFIDA) to track foreign entities' property ownership in the U.S.
Hinson and Rep. Elissa Slotkin (D-MI) introduced the Securing American Agriculture Act, which Hinson said will "help reshore this critical supply chain to ensure Communist China does not have the power to restrict American food production," according to a press release.
According to Fox News, Hinson’s new agricultural legislation would "reshore this critical supply chain to ensure Communist China does not have the power to restrict American food production" and require the federal government to carefully monitor the health of U.S. national agriculture supply chain and land reciprocity annually.
As reported by Prosperous America, the Securing America’s Land from Foreign Interference Act would prevent official members of the Chinese government from acquiring land in the U.S. and its territories. Congressman Chip Roy (R-TX) said that action must be taken to "thwart the CCP from ever seizing control of strategically valuable domestic assets in the U.S."
Hinson represents Iowa’s 2nd congressional district and is an Iowa native. She has had extensive experience advocating for her community, focusing on cutting taxes, lobbying prevention, and working with business owners, community leaders, and workers in her district. Hinson is also part of the House Appropriations Committee and the Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party.
