Within the framework of the Memorandum of Understanding between the Ministry of National Defense of the Republic of Angola and the Department of Defense of the United States on Defense Cooperation, signed on May 17, 2017, the inaugural meeting of the Joint Angolan-American Defense Cooperation Committee was held at the Pentagon in Washington, DC, from June 5 to June 6, 2024.

The delegations were led by Tressa Guenov, Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for International Security Affairs, as Chair of the Committee, and General Ret Afonso Carlos Neto, Secretary of State for Military Industry, as Co-Chair.

The Committee meeting affirmed both countries' commitment to strengthening defense cooperation. This commitment is based on recent high-level meetings between the United States Department of Defense and Angola's Ministry of National Defense.

The delegations discussed various topics including regional security, security cooperation, peace operations, cybersecurity, maritime security, and capacity building.

The heads of delegations signed a Cooperation Agreement on Acquisition and Cross Services. This agreement will facilitate closer logistical cooperation between their Armed Forces.

Both parties intend to pursue a closer security relationship and will continue to examine and implement cooperation in these areas during the next meeting of the Joint Angolan-American Defense Cooperation Committee scheduled to be held in Luanda in 2025.
