CUPERTINO, CALIFORNIA — Apple today previewed macOS Sequoia, the next version of its desktop operating system, introducing new productivity and intelligence features to Mac. Key additions include iPhone Mirroring, which expands Continuity by enabling full access to and control of iPhone directly from macOS. Safari receives an update with the new Highlights feature for easier information discovery on webpages. The new Passwords app simplifies password management.
macOS Sequoia also introduces Apple Intelligence, a personal intelligence system integrated into macOS Sequoia, iOS 18, and iPadOS 18. It leverages generative models and personal context to enhance everyday tasks while prioritizing privacy. Supported by every Mac with an M-series chip, Apple Intelligence is designed to improve user experience across devices.
“The all-star combination of the power of Apple silicon and the legendary ease of use of macOS have made the Mac more capable than ever,” said Craig Federighi, Apple’s senior vice president of Software Engineering. “Today, we’re excited to take macOS to new heights with macOS Sequoia, a big release that elevates productivity and intelligence.”
iPhone Mirroring allows users to interact with their iPhone from their Mac using custom wallpaper and icons identical to those on their phone. Users can drag and drop between devices while maintaining security through locked screens.
Safari's Highlights feature aids in discovering information such as directions or summaries on webpages. A redesigned Reader offers a streamlined view of articles without distractions.
The gaming experience on Mac is set for enhancement with titles like Assassin’s Creed Shadows and Frostpunk 2 coming soon. Personalized Spatial Audio aims to make gaming more immersive.
Developers are delivering a range of new titles including Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown and additional games from the RESIDENT EVIL series. Game Porting Toolkit 2 will further facilitate bringing advanced games to Mac.
macOS Sequoia also includes tools for organizing windows efficiently through automatic tiling suggestions when dragging windows to screen edges. Presenter preview aids in sharing content during video calls via FaceTime or Zoom.
Built on Keychain's foundation, the Passwords app consolidates credentials in one place with secure end-to-end encryption via iCloud syncing.
Apple Intelligence introduces Writing Tools across apps like Mail and Notes for rewriting or summarizing text seamlessly. Image Playground enables quick creation of images in various styles within Messages or a dedicated app.
Siri has been updated for improved natural interaction through text or voice commands. Private Cloud Compute ensures data privacy during AI processing by not storing user data accessible to Apple.
Additional updates include enhanced messaging features in Messages, curated hikes in Apple Maps starting this fall, improved photo organization in Photos Collections, smarter note-taking capabilities in Notes, an updated Calculator app showing previous calculations history, and Calendar integration with Reminders for better task management throughout the day.
The developer beta of macOS Sequoia is available now through the Apple Developer Program; a public beta will follow next month via the Apple Beta Software Program. The official release is expected this fall as a free software update.
