The Justice Department issued a statement from Attorney General Merrick B. Garland regarding the Supreme Court’s decision in United States v. Rahimi on June 21, 2024.

“The Supreme Court’s decision today in United States v. Rahimi upholds Congress’s longstanding prohibition on the possession of firearms by people subject to domestic-violence restraining orders,” Garland stated. “That law protects victims by keeping firearms out of the hands of dangerous individuals who pose a threat to their intimate partners and children.”

Garland emphasized that the Justice Department had argued, and the Court reaffirmed, that this prohibition aligns with both precedent and the Second Amendment's text and history.

“The Justice Department will continue to enforce this important statute, which for nearly 30 years has helped to protect victims and survivors of domestic violence from their abusers,” Garland continued. “And we will continue to deploy all available resources to support law enforcement, prosecutors, courts, and victim advocates to address the pervasive problem of domestic violence.”
