Assistant Secretary Stewart visits California for discussions on arms control

Assistant Secretary of State for Arms Control, Deterrence, and Stability (ADS) Mallory Stewart will travel to California from July 17-18, 2024. During her visit, she will give remarks at the Public Policy and Nuclear Threats Bootcamp at the University of California’s Institute on Global Conflict and Cooperation. Additionally, she will visit two U.S. Space Force (USSF) bases to conduct meetings with USSF leadership and observe military space operations units.

On July 17, Assistant Secretary Stewart will visit the USSF’s Space Systems Command (SSC) at Los Angeles Air Force Base. During this visit, she will receive briefings on current and future space systems initiatives, discuss SSC's role in maintaining and enhancing the United States’ national security space architecture, and address U.S. space cooperation with allies and partners. She will also visit SpaceX to build ADS’s public-private partnerships and explore opportunities for collaboration in space security technologies. Discussions with SpaceX officials will focus on aligning space policy efforts with advancements in the commercial space industry.

On July 18, Assistant Secretary Stewart will travel to Vandenberg Space Force Base to gain insight into USSF and U.S. Space Command (USSPACECOM) missions. She is scheduled to meet with Lieutenant General Doug Schiess, Commander of U.S. Space Forces – Space (S4S), to learn about S4S missions along with joint and allied space operations while sharing her perspectives on Department of State space policy activities. Briefings from USSF and USSPACECOM units are also planned, including sessions with the 18th Space Defense Squadron on the Space Domain Awareness mission and from Space Delta One on USSF’s training enterprise.

This trip underscores Assistant Secretary Stewart’s commitment to fostering innovation and collaboration in strengthening national defense while building robust partnerships across aerospace and defense sectors with key leaders and stakeholders.
