Rep. Clay Higgins: 'Cartels are running thousands of drones as criminal scouts at our southern border'

U.S. Representative Clay Higgins stated that cartels are operating drones as scouts at the border. Rep. Higgins made the statement in an X post on July 10.

"Cartels are running thousands of drones as criminal scouts at our southern border," said Higgins, U.S. Representative for Louisiana. "Congressman Higgins wants the Biden Administration to stop interfering with law enforcement's ability to seize those drones out of American airspace."

According to the New York Post, around a thousand drones per month have been witnessed approaching U.S. airspace from Mexico at the southwest border. Cartels utilize the drones to watch Border Patrol agents to more easily carry out their smuggling and drug trafficking activities.

In March 2023, two individuals were caught using drones to watch Border Patrol agents, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) reported. The footage captured on these surveillance drones also showed 30 illegal migrants crossing the border. The individuals were arrested for human smuggling, and the illegal migrants were detained.

Higgins serves as the U.S. Representative for the 3rd Congressional District of Louisiana, according to his website. He is the Chairman of the Border Security and Enforcement Subcommittee and is also on the House Oversight and Accountability Committee.
