Deputy Secretary Campbell’s Meetings in the United Kingdom

From July 18 to 20, Deputy Secretary of State Kurt M. Campbell, joined by Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs James C. O’Brien, visited London for consultations with the UK government. The Deputy Secretary’s meetings followed engagements between President Biden and Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer and Secretary Blinken and Foreign Secretary David Lammy during the NATO Summit in Washington last week.
In London, the Deputy Secretary met with Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) and Cabinet Office colleagues: FCDO Permanent Under-Secretary Sir Philip Barton, FCDO Minister of State Stephen Doughty MP, FCDO Minister for the Constitution and European Union Relations Nick Thomas-Symonds MP, National Security Advisor Sir Tim Barrow, Deputy National Security Advisor Dame Sarah MacIntosh, and Dr. John Bew, along with other senior leaders. Their discussions included dedicated sessions on the Indo-Pacific, including competition with the People’s Republic of China; on Africa; on the Middle East; and on the AUKUS trilateral security partnership between Australia, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
The Deputy Secretary congratulated the UK government on its successful hosting of the European Political Community, which reflected continued resolve in the United Kingdom and across Europe, as in the United States, to stand with Ukraine.
The Deputy Secretary also worked with UK officials to set the agenda for the upcoming U.S.-UK Strategic Dialogue. The dialogue will encompass a wide range of global cooperation efforts between the United States and the United Kingdom, spanning regions and topics from disinformation and technology to climate and development. In each engagement, the Deputy Secretary emphasized "the strength of the Special Relationship" and "the vital role of existing and future U.S.-UK partnership globally."
