Apple TV+ will premiere a four-part documentary on August 2, detailing rookie FBI agent Scott Lawson’s efforts to dismantle the Trevino brothers' leadership of the Los Zetas cartel. This announcement was made in a news release on July 23.

According to the release, the documentary focuses on how Lawson disrupted the cartel’s multimillion-dollar money laundering operation, which was conducted through American Quarter Horse racing. The series features interviews with Lawson, IRS agent Steve Pennington, Irving police officers Steve Junker, Brian Schutt, and Kim Williams; Assistant U.S. Attorney Doug Gardner; and Pulitzer Prize-winning New York Times journalist Ginger Thompson, among others.

The series is produced by Breaklight Pictures, with Dan Johnstone, Cator Fernandez, Eric Newman, Steve Michaels, and Jodi Flynn serving as executive producers. Johnstone and Fernandez direct the series, while author Joe Tone, who wrote "Bones: Brothers, Horses, Cartels, and the Borderland Dream," serves as a consultant.

A sophisticated drug trafficking operation run by a Mexican cartel known as the "Cowboy Cartel" was uncovered for its deep infiltration into the American racehorse industry. According to Fox News, the cartel used its involvement in breeding and racing horses to launder money from its extensive drug trade. This strategy allowed them to obscure their criminal activities behind a seemingly legitimate business front while continuing to smuggle drugs into the United States.

Fox News reported that U.S. authorities discovered that the cartel not only used the horse racing business to launder millions of dollars but also established connections with prominent figures in the industry. This network helped conceal their illicit activities for years, demonstrating how organized crime can mask illegal operations under a legitimate business guise.
