Deputy Secretary of Commerce Don Graves delivered remarks at the South Carolina Sustainability Institute on August 28, 2024. The event was held in Rosemont and brought together local and state leaders, including Mayor Cogswell, Mayor Burgess, and Representative Wetmore.

Graves emphasized the importance of advancing sustainability in South Carolina. He extended special thanks to Congressman Clyburn, who could not attend but was recognized as a significant advocate for his constituents.

"The Biden-Harris Administration is committed to ensuring that every community across the country is on a path toward long-term prosperity and success," Graves stated. He highlighted targeted investments designed to meet community needs as crucial steps towards a sustainable future.

A key focus of these efforts is climate resiliency, particularly for underrepresented communities that are often most affected by climate change. "Underserved communities are often the hardest hit by climate change," Graves noted, adding that access to essential services can be compromised in low-lying areas during high tides.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is committing resources to habitat restoration efforts in South Carolina. The Sustainability Institute has been awarded the Tribes and Underserved Communities Habitat Restoration grant from NOAA.

This initiative is part of a broader $45 million commitment supporting 27 projects nationwide. This funding comes from landmark legislation such as the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and the Inflation Reduction Act, both championed by Congressman Clyburn and signed into law by President Biden.

"When we uplift communities in need, we all benefit," Graves said. He underscored that this work saves lives and secures livelihoods. Graves concluded by expressing optimism about strengthening partnerships with The Sustainability Institute and building an inclusive economy for all South Carolinians and Americans.
