The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) has called for additional safeguards in Maryland's policy governing police use of facial recognition technology. Jeramie Scott, the director of the project on surveillance oversight at the Electronic Privacy Information Center (EPIC), commented on the ACLU’s recommendations.
Scott noted that the ACLU’s points seem aimed at minimizing potential negative outcomes. “The ACLU’s points appear designed to reduce the chances of ‘worst-case scenarios,’” he said.
While advocating for a complete ban on facial recognition technology, Scott emphasized the importance of implementing safeguards if the technology is to be used. He also stressed the need for “extensive training” for individuals who analyze search results.
