The U.S. Department of Labor announced the opening of the public comment period for its proposed rule aimed at protecting workers from extreme heat, following its publication in the Federal Register.

Announced in July 2024 by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), the rule, if finalized, would protect approximately 36 million workers in both indoor and outdoor settings. The initiative seeks to reduce workplace heat-related injuries, illnesses, and fatalities.

OSHA encourages public participation in the rulemaking process to help develop a final rule that effectively protects workers while being feasible for employers and based on the best available evidence.

Comments can be submitted to Docket Number OSHA-2021-0009. Directions for submission are included in the Federal Register notice. OSHA plans to hold a public hearing after the written comment period concludes, with further details forthcoming.
