On Thursday, September 5, 2024, the Center for Democracy and Technology (CDT) joined an amicus brief led by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Northern California and the Electronic Frontier Foundation in support of Professor Ethan Zuckerman’s challenge against Meta.

The case, litigated by the Knight First Amendment Institute, seeks preemptive protection for Professor Zuckerman to release Unfollow Everything 2.0, a browser extension that would allow users to modify their Facebook newsfeeds and change how they receive information on that platform.

The brief argues that Section 230’s statutory text, findings, policy statements, and legislative history confirm that Congress conferred immunity for user-empowerment technologies like Unfollow Everything 2.0 and that Section 230 protects users’ rights in the digital age.
