The Information Technology Industry Council (ITI), a global tech trade association, has urged the UK government to adopt a global, pro-innovation approach to data and technology. ITI's new recommendations provide guidance on artificial intelligence (AI), cross-border data flows, trade, and security with the aim of boosting the UK economy, transforming public services, and advancing an ambitious Industrial Strategy.

"The new UK government has the opportunity to work with industry to drive forward a bold digital vision that stimulates strategic investments, boosts economy-wide growth, and further strengthens the UK's position globally," said ITI President and CEO Jason Oxman. "The global technology industry is an essential pillar of the UK economy and a key partner in delivering the government's primary mission of economic growth and stability, as well as its broader vision for change."

ITI's global membership contributes significantly across various segments of the UK tech ecosystem. This includes next-generation semiconductor providers, data centers, cloud infrastructure providers, as well as innovative technology and data-driven services that support businesses and consumers while driving productivity nationwide.

ITI’s Global Tech Policy Recommendations outline five policy priorities for the UK government:

1. Putting technology at the center of the UK's Industrial Strategy: The strategy should recognize the critical role of global technology investments and their spillover effects on productivity across all sectors.

2. A pro-innovation approach to technology and AI governance: The focus should be on enabling responsible development and deployment of AI systems within a proportionate regulatory environment aimed at competitiveness and growth.

3. Championing international data flows: The UK should lead in promoting flexible systems for cross-border data transfers that uphold high standards while fostering new technologies.

4. Boosting UK critical infrastructure and economy-wide cybersecurity: Future-proofed cybersecurity standards are essential for economic growth and successful digitization of public services.

5. Strengthening global economic and security relationships: The UK should play a pivotal role in advancing a robust global trade agenda with deeper transatlantic cooperation on data and technology policies.
