US assesses Syrian election conditions as unmet

ORGANIZATIONS IN THIS STORY

The United States has assessed that the necessary conditions for convening free, fair, transparent, and inclusive elections in Syria have not been met. Consequently, it does not support the recent announcement by the Democratic Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (DAANES) calling on the High Elections Committee to begin preparations for municipal elections.

The U.S. has consistently maintained that any elections in Syria should adhere to standards of being free, fair, transparent, and inclusive, in line with UN Security Council Resolution 2254. According to the U.S., these conditions are currently unmet across Syria, including in the North and East.
