FTC issues refunds over CafePress data breach

ORGANIZATIONS IN THIS STORY

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is distributing payments exceeding $370,000 to consumers affected by data security lapses at the online merchandise platform CafePress.

These payments are part of a March 2022 settlement addressing FTC allegations that CafePress failed to implement adequate security measures to protect sensitive information on its network. The company reportedly stored Social Security numbers and password reset answers in clear text and retained this data longer than necessary. Due to these security shortcomings, CafePress experienced multiple breaches, allowing hackers access to sensitive user data, including Social Security numbers. Additionally, the company did not sufficiently inform consumers about these breaches.

The FTC is issuing checks and PayPal payments to 20,044 consumers who filed valid claims before the deadline. Consumers are advised to cash their checks within 90 days or redeem their PayPal payments within 30 days.

Consumers with questions should contact the refund administrator, Rust Consulting, at 1-833-415-2795 or email info@CafePressSettlement.com. Further information can be found on the FTC website under frequently asked questions about the refund process. The Commission emphasizes that it never requires individuals to pay money or provide account information for refunds.

The FTC’s interactive dashboards for refund data offer a state-by-state breakdown of refunds in various cases. In 2023 alone, FTC actions resulted in $330 million in refunds to consumers nationwide.

The Federal Trade Commission aims to promote competition while protecting and educating consumers. The FTC will never demand money, make threats, instruct you to transfer funds, or promise prizes.
