CDT Europe, in collaboration with 41 civil society organizations, will co-host the "Tech and Society Summit" on October 1, 2024. The event aims to facilitate dialogue between civil society and newly elected EU decision-makers, focusing on technology, society, and environmental issues. The summit seeks to bridge digital rights organizations and policymakers to support accountable policies that advance digital rights.
The draft program outlines various panels and roundtable discussions organized by CDT Europe. One such discussion is titled "Making EU laws work for people: how can civil society best support institutions?" This roundtable will address the challenges faced by civil society in accessing legislative processes and enforcement mechanisms. Speakers include Asha Allen from the Centre for Democracy & Technology Europe, Irina Orssich from the AI Office, Rita Wezenbeek from the European Commission, Alexandre Biard from BEUC, and Katarzyna Szymielewicz from the Panoptykon Foundation. Karolina Iwańska of ECNL will moderate.
Another key session is an invite-only roundtable on spyware regulation in the EU, co-organized by CDT Europe and Amnesty International. This closed-door meeting will gather policymakers and civil society representatives to discuss pathways for regulating spyware within the EU framework. Discussions will focus on international initiatives like the Pall Mall Process and recent EU actions such as reviewing export controls.
Additionally, a visionary roundtable titled "Building an EU digital enforcement strategy" will be held in partnership with EDRi, ECNL, Amnesty Tech, BEUC, Liberties, and Panoptykon Foundation. This session aims to develop an effective EU digital enforcement strategy that protects rights while addressing digitalization challenges. Key questions include facilitating redress for harmed individuals, creating synergies between regulators, and ensuring compliance by public and private entities.
Attendees concerned about spyware can visit the Antispyware Clinic run by experts from Access Now Digital Security Helpline for device checks. The CDT Europe team will also provide insights into advocacy efforts for better spyware regulation in the EU.
