The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has recognized four Nevada organizations for their pollution prevention efforts as part of the 2024 Regional Pollution Prevention (P2) recognition program during Pollution Prevention Week. The honored entities include Alibi Ale Works in Incline Village, Carson City Toyota in Carson City, La Nova Beauty in Reno, and The Pad climbing gym in Henderson.
“EPA is proud to recognize the accomplishments of these environmental leaders in Nevada who are preventing pollution and making meaningful change in their communities," said EPA Pacific Southwest Land, Chemicals, and Redevelopment Division Director Claire Trombadore. "These honorees are taking action to reduce pollution, advance environmental justice and address climate change.”
Alibi Ale Works has made strides by capturing carbon dioxide (CO2) during its brewing process using dry hopping methods, spunding valves, and CO2 capture technology. This initiative saves 2,600 pounds of CO2 annually through an on-site closed-loop cycle. Kevin Drake, Co-Founder & CEO of Alibi Ale Works, stated: "Capturing natural CO2 during fermentation is a no-brainer for us. It protects our environment, saves money, and makes better beer."
Carson City Toyota has implemented several eco-friendly measures including switching to LED lighting, using non-toxic cleaning products, installing low-flow plumbing fixtures, and purchasing recycled paper. These changes conserved over 48,000 kilowatt hours (kWh) of energy and 84,816 gallons of water in 2023. Cliff Sorenson, Director at Carson City Toyota remarked: “By giving back to Mother Earth, we impact not only our current community but also future generations.”
La Nova Beauty employs organic and ethically sourced beauty products while reducing waste by repurposing glass jars and bottles. The salon also installed LED lighting and low-flow faucet aerators throughout its premises.
The Pad climbing gym upgraded to energy-efficient lighting fixtures and low-flow plumbing fixtures while offering charging stations for electric bikes. In 2023 alone, the gym conserved 48,888 kWh of energy and 50,132 gallons of water.
In total for 2023 across Arizona, California and Nevada regions recognized by EPA’s Pacific Southwest P2 program:
- The equivalent of 1,443 metric tons of carbon dioxide was reduced.
- Energy use was cut by 1.98 million kWh.
- Water usage was decreased by 11.28 million gallons.
- Business costs were lowered by $495,000.
Pollution Prevention Week runs from September 16-20 this year with the theme “Together We Are One Planet.” The EPA Regional Pollution Prevention Recognition program is voluntary with applications open annually for interested organizations.
