EPA starts sewer design project in Wahikuli

ORGANIZATIONS IN THIS STORY

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has initiated the sewer design project for the Wahikuli Subdivision, located north of Lahaina Town, Maui. The EPA's Wahikuli Sewer Design Team will participate in the Weekly Disaster Recovery Community Update Meeting on September 25, 2024, to provide an overview of the project and explain how the public can offer input.

On September 26, 2024, the EPA’s team will conduct an onsite visit to the Wahikuli Subdivision. Residents should be aware that EPA personnel and contractors will be present in the neighborhood during this period.

This initiative follows a request from the County of Maui on January 13, 2024, for FEMA technical assistance. Through a FEMA Mission Assignment, EPA was asked to assist with planning and designing a proposed gravity sewer system for approximately 230 properties in the Wahikuli subdivision currently serviced by individual wastewater systems such as cesspools and septic systems.

The project's scope includes conducting an environmental review with cultural and biological consultations while seeking public input. It also involves drafting pre-construction design and engineering plans to full completion following environmental reviews. Regular meetings with the County of Maui will be held, along with periodic public updates via weekly community update meetings throughout the project period.
