Deputy Secretary of the Treasury Wally Adeyemo met with Bank of Israel Governor Amir Yaron in New York today. During their discussion, Deputy Secretary Adeyemo emphasized the importance of preventing terrorists and violent extremists from raising, using, and moving funds. He shared the Treasury’s efforts to strengthen counter-terrorism financing globally with partners and allies.
Adeyemo highlighted that a stable economy in the West Bank contributes to Israel's security. He conveyed the U.S. Government's concerns about potential threats from some Israeli government members to sever correspondent banking relationships between Israeli and Palestinian banks. Adeyemo insisted these relationships should be extended for at least a year.
He noted that extending these banking relations is crucial to preventing an economic crisis in the West Bank and strengthening Israel’s security by countering financial flows that fund terror groups.
