The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the International Motorsports Association (IMSA) are set to host a Green Racing Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) event on October 8, 2024. The event will take place at East Hall High School in Gainesville, Georgia.
The initiative will involve scientists and engineers from the EPA, IMSA, and Georgia Tech collaborating with the Paul Miller Racing Team. Their aim is to introduce students to career paths, internships, and scholarships related to STEM fields within the racing industry and at the EPA. This educational event will also focus on diversity and inclusion opportunities available in IMSA racing and at the EPA.
Students attending will have a chance to explore the science and technology behind racing by examining a BMW M4 GT3 race car from the Paul Miller Racing Team. Additionally, they will view Georgia Tech’s award-winning hybrid-electric vehicle that participated in the U.S. Department of Energy’s 2022 EcoCAR Mobility Challenge.
The Green Racing Initiative started in 2008 as a collaboration between the EPA, DOE, and Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE). Its goal is to promote clean technologies in racing that can transition into consumer vehicles. "From the Raceway to the Driveway" is their guiding slogan.
Over time, partnerships with IMSA have helped further this initiative. EPA Region 4 has worked with EPA's Office of Transportation and Air Quality (OTAQ) to educate fans about environmental benefits associated with clean fuels and advanced vehicle technologies at events like Petit Le Mans at Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta.
This year’s Petit Le Mans will feature an educational display organized by EPA alongside IMSA and Georgia Tech's EcoCAR Team from October 8 through October 12, 2024.
