The United States, in collaboration with Canada, has announced sanctions against the Samidoun Palestinian Prisoner Solidarity Network. This organization is accused of acting as a fundraising arm for the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), which is designated as a terrorist group. The PFLP reportedly uses Samidoun to support its operations across Europe and North America. Khaled Barakat, identified as part of the PFLP leadership, has also been designated.
Canada has officially listed Samidoun as a terrorist entity under its Criminal Code since October 11. This designation allows Canada to identify groups or individuals associated with terrorism publicly and prohibits actions related to terrorist financing.
"The United States will continue to disrupt sham organizations that function under the guise of humanitarian organizations while funding terrorism," stated Matthew Miller, Department Spokesperson. He emphasized the ongoing commitment to work with international partners against global fundraisers for terrorist organizations.
The U.S. Department of State labeled the PFLP as a Foreign Terrorist Organization in 1997 and a Specially Designated Global Terrorist in 2001. The current actions by the Department of Treasury are pursuant to Executive Order 13224, aimed at counterterrorism efforts.
