U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officials apprehended 11 non-citizens from Romania, Brazil, and the Dominican Republic traveling on a private vessel from St. Thomas to Culebra, Puerto Rico. The incident occurred on Sunday when the vessel experienced mechanical difficulties near Botany Bay, USVI.

According to Reggie Johnson, Acting Chief Patrol Agent for the Ramey Border Patrol Sector, "Smuggling organizations exploit diverse routes and methods to introduce people or contraband throughout Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands." He emphasized the agency's commitment to addressing illicit activities by working with local and federal partners.

The group consisted of two adult women and two adult men from Romania, two adult men from Brazil, and five adult men from the Dominican Republic. They were transported to the USBP/ERO co-location facility at Crown Mountain for processing and removal due to their lack of documents authorizing their presence in the United States.

The U.S. Border Patrol remains vigilant in monitoring changes in migration patterns, particularly irregular migration outside legal pathways. Collaboration with federal and international partners is crucial in combating human smuggling.

The Ramey Sector covers both Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands and is unique as it is located outside the continental United States. This sector oversees approximately 6,000 square miles of land and water area, including territorial waters around these islands.
