Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III held a discussion with Israeli Minister of Defense Yoav Gallant on October 16, focusing on Israel's operations in Lebanon and regional security issues. Pentagon Press Secretary Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder provided the details of the conversation.
The dialogue included discussions about the deployment of a Terminal High-Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) battery, illustrating the United States' strong support for Israel's defense. Secretary Austin urged the Israeli government to continue efforts to address humanitarian needs, highlighting recent steps taken by Israel to increase humanitarian aid to Gaza.
Secretary Austin emphasized the importance of ensuring the safety and security of UNIFIL forces and the Lebanese Armed Forces. He also stressed pursuing diplomatic solutions to secure civilians on both sides of the Israel-Lebanon border as soon as possible.
"The Secretary reaffirmed the United States' unwavering, enduring, and ironclad commitment to Israel's security," noted Ryder, adding that "the United States is well postured to defend U.S. personnel, partners, and allies."
