Texas Governor: Cartels ‘strategically manufacture fentanyl’ as ‘painkillers, stimulants, anti-anxiety drugs, candy’

Greg Abbott, the Governor of Texas, said that cartels can make fentanyl appear as "painkillers, stimulants, anti-anxiety drugs, candy." He made this statement on X on October 30.

"As Texans celebrate Halloween, please help to educate your loved ones on the dangers of fentanyl," said Governor Greg Abbott, Texas Gov. "Mexican drug cartels strategically manufacture fentanyl disguised as painkillers, stimulants, anti-anxiety drugs, and even candy. Be on alert tomorrow and always."

In 2022, Abbott established the "One Pill Kills" campaign for the state of Texas. According to a press release from the Texas Governor's office, the campaign aims to counter the fentanyl crisis.

As part of "One Pill Kills," Abbott is warning Texas citizens to be vigilant about fentanyl disguised as other substances, particularly during Halloween. The lethal dose of fentanyl is 2 milligrams.

From 2019 to 2023, fentanyl was responsible for 7,000 deaths in Texas. A press release credits Abbott's "One Pill Kills" campaign for a recent decrease in fentanyl overdose deaths. In the last year, there was a 20% decrease in deaths related to fentanyl, resulting in 430 fewer deaths in Texas compared to the previous year.

Abbott was elected as the 48th Governor of Texas in 2014 and re-elected to his third term in 2022. He currently serves as the state's governor.
