San Diego's Border Patrol Sector, in collaboration with the San Diego Air and Marine Branch, intercepted multiple maritime human smuggling operations within a 24-hour period. The incidents occurred over the weekend along San Diego's beach areas.

The first event took place on Sunday morning around 9:30 a.m. when agents from CBP’s San Diego Air and Marine Branch observed a fishing vessel drop off four individuals at Dana Landing in Mission Bay. Upon inspection, these individuals were found to be illegally present in the U.S. They were arrested alongside the vessel's captain and crew member. A suspected human smuggler attempting to pick up the individuals was also apprehended. All involved parties were taken to a local Border Patrol station for processing, and the case will be prosecuted under 8 USC 1324. The vessel and sedan used in this operation were seized by Air and Marine Operations.

Later that morning, agents from CBP’s San Clemente Border Patrol Station responded to another maritime smuggling event near Crystal Cove in Newport Beach. Sixteen individuals exited a beached pleasure craft vessel and attempted to flee towards local roadways. Using an Air and Marine Operations helicopter, agents located all 16 individuals who were then transported for further processing. The vessel was seized.

Brandon J. Tucker, Director of Air and Marine Operations, commented on these events stating, “Smugglers consistently put migrants at risk, with disregard for their safety.” He emphasized the dangers of using ocean routes for illegal entry into the United States.

A third incident occurred early Monday morning when agents spotted a suspicious panga three miles off Solana Beach's coast. By approximately 4 a.m., it had dropped off several individuals near Beacons Beach in Leucadia. Fifteen individuals were found illegally present in the U.S., but the captain managed to evade capture by returning south into Mexican waters.

Chief Patrol Agent Patricia McGurk-Daniel warned about the risks associated with these dangerous routes during winter months: “Our message has been consistent, do not place your life in the hands of smugglers who promise you safe passage.”

The San Diego Border Patrol Sector oversees more than 931 coastal miles along California's coast to prevent human smuggling as well as drug trafficking and other contraband activities.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) is America's largest law enforcement organization tasked with protecting borders on land, air, and sea while facilitating lawful travel and trade.
