The U.S. Department of State's Special Envoy for Global Youth Issues, Abby Finkenauer, is set to visit Sri Lanka and Nepal from November 12-15, 2024. This trip underscores the United States' dedication to empowering young leaders in South Asia by promoting civic engagement and addressing significant issues such as youth leadership, cultural preservation, and community resilience.
In Sri Lanka, Finkenauer will observe the effects of the U.S.-Sri Lanka partnership on local communities. She will explore programs focusing on education, leadership, and civic engagement that aim to empower young leaders while contributing to social and economic development. Accompanied by U.S. Ambassador Julie Chung, she will interact with participants of the Embassy’s Youth Forum and alumni from the Emerging Leaders Academy. This USAID-supported initiative fosters civic engagement and leadership among underrepresented groups. Additionally, she will engage with members of the Women in Motion program, which motivates young women to pursue careers in creative fields. Her visit includes meetings with successful young entrepreneurs whose achievements showcase the impact of U.S.-backed skills-building programs.
In Nepal, Finkenauer plans to meet young political leaders and alumni of U.S.-funded exchange programs to discuss challenges and opportunities in youth leadership. She is also scheduled for a roundtable discussion with social media influencers about pressing issues like cyberbullying and misinformation. Furthermore, she will connect with members of the U.S. Youth Council to talk about foreign policy priorities and witness their mock election program.
This journey aims to strengthen partnerships with South Asian youth leaders while enhancing collaborative efforts on global issues affecting young people. Updates on her travels can be followed through @USGlobalYouth on X or @USGlobalYouthEnvoy on Instagram and Facebook.
