The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has announced a significant financial commitment to enhance port operations in Puerto Rico. A $1.8 million grant has been awarded to the Puerto Rico Ports Authority, aiming to improve climate resilience and air quality through the introduction of zero-emission technology.

At a press conference held at the EPA’s office in Guaynabo, Regional Administrator Lisa F. Garcia highlighted the importance of ports in delivering essential goods while acknowledging their role in contributing to air and climate pollution. "With this funding, we’re taking steps to protect community health, improve air quality, and promote climate resilience," she stated.

Joel A. Pizá Batiz, Executive Director of the Puerto Rico Ports Authority, expressed gratitude for the grant, recognizing its potential impact on both daily commerce and emergency response efforts at the Port of San Juan. He emphasized that this funding will aid in emission reduction strategies and strengthen the port's long-term resilience.

The EPA selected the Puerto Rico Ports Authority for a Climate and Air Quality Planning Grant. This grant will help develop an emissions inventory baseline as well as future projections for 2030 and 2050, alongside strategies for emissions reduction involving feasible vehicles and equipment.

This initiative is part of President Biden’s Inflation Reduction Act—the largest investment aimed at combating climate change in U.S. history—and seeks to reduce diesel air pollution from ports while creating good-paying jobs that support America's ports' economic vitality.

EPA previously announced two funding opportunities for U.S. ports: one focusing on zero-emission technology deployment and another on climate and air quality planning activities. The response was robust with over $8 billion requested by applicants nationwide.

After reviewing applications thoroughly, EPA chose 55 projects that align with workforce development goals and national objectives for a zero-emission freight sector under several strategic initiatives like the National Blueprint for Transportation Decarbonization.

Projects will cover various equipment types used at ports with funds allocated towards battery-electric or hydrogen-powered machinery along with necessary infrastructure like charging stations or solar power systems.
