Today, the United States and the United Kingdom have officially enacted an amendment to their 1958 Agreement on Cooperation on the Uses of Atomic Energy for Mutual Defense Purposes. This longstanding agreement facilitates the exchange of equipment, as well as classified and controlled unclassified information, between the two nations for defense objectives. It is noted as the most comprehensive such agreement that the United States maintains with any other country.
The newly implemented amendment ensures that the agreement remains enduring in its entirety. This continuation is aimed at bolstering U.S. and UK technical capabilities to address both current and future threats effectively.
Officials state that this amendment underscores the strength and resilience of U.S.-UK cooperation on these matters. The relationship between the two countries covers a wide array of foreign and security policy priorities.
Furthermore, it is affirmed that both the agreement and its amendments align with the Treaty on the Non-proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), a key element in maintaining global nuclear non-proliferation standards.
