Chairman John Moolenaar and Ranking Member Raja Krishnamoorthi have expressed approval of Canada's recent decision to mandate the closure of TikTok's offices within its borders. This action follows a national security review concerning the social media platform.
"We are pleased to see Canada take the important first step of scrutinizing ByteDance’s foreign investment in Canada and closing TikTok’s offices," they stated. The statement underscores concerns about the Chinese Communist Party's influence over ByteDance, TikTok's parent company.
The U.S. Congress has previously addressed these issues through legislation such as the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Applications Act, highlighting similar security risks posed by foreign-controlled applications.
"It is imperative for our partners and allies around the globe to take action to counter the threat," Moolenaar and Krishnamoorthi emphasized, encouraging international cooperation on this matter.
