Trump: Tariffs will target fentanyl, illegal aliens to ‘stop this invasion of our country’

President-elect Donald Trump announced that one of his initial executive orders will be to impose a 25% tariff on all products imported from Mexico and Canada. He said this measure aims to "stop this invasion of our country." Trump shared his statement on Truth Social on November 25.

"As everyone is aware, thousands of people are pouring through Mexico and Canada, bringing Crime and Drugs at levels never seen before,” President-elect Donald Trump said," said Donald J. Trump, U.S. President-elect. "Right now a Caravan coming from Mexico, composed of thousands of people, seems to be unstoppable in its quest to come through our currently Open Border. On January 20th, as one of my many first Executive Orders, I will sign all necessary documents to charge Mexico and Canada a 25% Tariff on ALL products coming into the United States, and its ridiculous Open Borders. This Tariff will remain in effect until such time as Drugs, in particular Fentanyl, and all Illegal Aliens stop this Invasion of our Country!"

According to AP News, Trump plans to implement new tariffs as part of an effort to curb illegal drugs and immigration. These tariffs would involve a 25% tax on goods entering the United States from its neighboring countries.

Scott Bessent, Trump's nominee for Secretary of the Treasury, expressed support for the proposed tariffs. In a Fox News Op-Ed, Bessent described tariffs as "a useful tool for achieving the president’s foreign policy objectives."

In response to concerns that these tariffs might increase costs for Americans, Bessent argued that similar measures during Trump's first term did not have such effects. According to Bessent's op-ed, inflation decreased during Trump's previous administration despite predictions to the contrary.

Trump further said in his Truth Social post, "Both Mexico and Canada have the absolute right and power to easily solve this long simmering problem." He added, "We hereby demand that they use this power, and until such time that they do, it is time for them to pay a very big price!"

Donald J. Trump previously served as the 45th President of the United States from 2017-2021 and was elected as the 47th President in November according to Britannica.
