The U.S. Department of Labor has announced an extension for the public comment period on a proposed rule aimed at protecting workers from extreme heat exposure in both indoor and outdoor workplaces. The new deadline for submitting comments is January 14, 2025.

Originally published in the Federal Register on August 30, 2024, the Notice of Proposed Rulemaking on Heat Injury and Illness Prevention was initially set to conclude its public comment period on December 30, 2024. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) decided to extend this period to allow stakeholders additional time to review the proposal and compile relevant information for their feedback.

An informal public hearing regarding the proposed rule is scheduled to commence on June 16, 2025.

Assistant Secretary for Occupational Safety and Health Douglas Parker stated, “Reducing the dangers of workplace heat exposure and illness is critical to saving lives and preventing workers from suffering needless illnesses.” He further noted that the extension will help ensure stakeholders can provide valuable insights necessary for crafting an effective rule.

Comments should be submitted under Docket Number OSHA-2021-0009.
