The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has released its 2024 report on ethanol market concentration, fulfilling a requirement set by the Energy Policy Act of 2005. This act mandates an annual review to assess whether there is enough competition in the ethanol production industry to prevent price-setting and other anticompetitive behaviors.
The latest report, consistent with previous years, states that "the level of concentration and number of market participants in the U.S. ethanol production industry continue to suggest that the exercise of market power to set prices, or coordinate on price or output levels, is unlikely on a nationwide basis."
The decision to approve the report was unanimous among FTC commissioners, with a vote tally of 5-0. Christopher Grengs from the Bureau of Competition served as the lead staff attorney for this matter.
The FTC's mission includes promoting competition and protecting consumers. It emphasizes that it will never demand money, make threats, instruct individuals to transfer money, or promise prizes. The agency encourages learning more about how competition benefits consumers and provides resources for filing antitrust complaints. For updates and information, individuals are invited to follow the FTC on social media, subscribe to press releases, and read their blog.
