The Biden-Harris Administration has finalized two awards under the CHIPS Incentives Program’s Funding Opportunity for Commercial Fabrication Facilities, aimed at enhancing U.S. technology leadership and supply chain security. The U.S. Department of Commerce announced that Absolics, an affiliate of Korea-based SKC, will receive up to $75 million in direct funding, while Entegris is set to receive up to $77 million. These awards follow previously signed preliminary memoranda of terms and the completion of due diligence by the Department.
U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo stated, "The Biden-Harris Administration’s investments in Absolics and Entegris are another example of how we are making investments up and down the semiconductor supply chain to advance U.S. economic and national security." She emphasized the role these investments will play in revitalizing the U.S. semiconductor industry and creating thousands of jobs.
Arati Prabhakar, Assistant to the President for Science and Technology, highlighted that "these new facilities will develop cutting-edge technologies that are essential to U.S. semiconductor leadership." Prabhakar added that this initiative would bolster national security while strengthening the economy by creating good-paying jobs.
Absolics plans to use its funding for the commercialization of glass substrate technology, with a spokesperson noting their commitment to maintaining a technological edge through research and development. Entegris President Bertrand Loy expressed satisfaction with receiving funding intended to strengthen U.S. semiconductor infrastructure, which he believes will benefit both customers' needs and Colorado Springs' local economy.
CHIPS for America has distributed over $19 billion from more than $36 billion allocated incentives funding across 20 states, aiming to create over 125,000 jobs nationwide since President Biden took office. The program is part of a broader economic plan by President Biden and Vice President Harris focused on stimulating private investment and reviving communities through domestic manufacturing efforts.
