According to Spokesperson Matthew Miller, Secretary Blinken voiced significant concerns regarding the declaration of martial law in South Korea but expressed relief at its subsequent lifting after a unanimous vote by the National Assembly.
During their discussion, Secretary Blinken conveyed his confidence in South Korea's democratic resilience during this challenging period and emphasized his expectation that the democratic process would continue to thrive. He also highlighted the progress made in strengthening bilateral relations between the United States and South Korea, including a robust trilateral partnership with Japan aimed at promoting shared values and ensuring prosperity and stability in the Indo-Pacific region.
Furthermore, Secretary Blinken reiterated that the U.S. commitment to its alliance with South Korea remains steadfast. He assured that "the American people stand shoulder to shoulder with the people of the Republic of Korea" and will persist in doing so amidst any provocations or threats to their alliance.
