Iowa Legislature prepares with new leaders and committee chairs for 2025 session

As the 2025 Iowa Legislative Session approaches, significant leadership changes and committee appointments have been announced. Senate Democrats have elected Sen. Janice Weiner (D-Johnson) as their new Senate Minority Leader, following the retirement of Senator Pam Jochum (D-Dubuque), who served in this role since June 2023.

In preparation for the upcoming session, Senate and House Republicans have finalized their committee chairs. These appointments include key committees such as Commerce, Judiciary, Health and Human Services (HHS), Technology, Transportation, and Local Government.

Matt Everson, NFIB Iowa State Director, commented on the challenges ahead: “The Iowa Legislature will have their work cut out for them in 2025,” highlighting issues like inflation and property taxes affecting small business owners. He anticipates full committee assignments to be released in mid-December.

Senate Majority Leader Jack Whitver has appointed several committee chairs: Senator Dawn Driscoll for Agriculture, Senator Tim Kraayenbrink for Appropriations, and Senator Mike Bousselot for Commerce among others.

House Speaker Pat Grassley has also announced his appointments for House Committee Chairs. Rep. Chad Ingels will chair Administrative Rules Review, Rep. Mike Sexton will lead Agriculture, and Rep. Gary Mohr will oversee Appropriations.

These leadership changes set the stage for legislative priorities in 2025 as lawmakers prepare to address pressing issues impacting Iowans.
