The Seattle Police Department has been awarded $1.5 million by the Department of Justice’s Bureau of Justice Assistance to enhance the testing of rape kits and address a backlog in sexual assault cases. This funding aims to support ongoing investigations and assist crime survivors.
U.S. Attorney Tessa M. Gorman stated, “This critical support is designed to move cases forward and support crime survivors as they heal.” She emphasized that the funds will be used for strategies such as genetic genealogy to solve cold cases and hold offenders accountable.
The grant will facilitate the creation of multidisciplinary teams within the Seattle Police Department, comprising prosecutors, victim advocates, and service providers. A case management system will be implemented to track investigations and manage victim services efficiently. The department plans to use advanced DNA testing methods and forensic genetic genealogy to progress in solving cold cases.
Additionally, the funding will ensure that victims receive notifications centered on their needs and trauma-informed support services, providing them with timely and sensitive updates throughout the process.
