A North Andover man, Daniel Medina, has pleaded guilty in federal court in Boston to possessing over 30 firearms and explosives as a convicted felon. The plea was entered before U.S. District Court Judge Patti B. Saris, who has scheduled sentencing for April 3, 2025.

Medina, aged 64, admitted to charges of unlawful possession of a machine gun, unlawful possession of explosives, and being a felon in possession of firearms and ammunition. He was charged by criminal complaint in October 2024.

The case began on July 1, 2024, when law enforcement responded to an explosion near Medina's residence. Upon investigation, they found damage to two vehicles and evidence linking the explosion to Medina. Witnesses reported seeing him fleeing the scene towards his home.

A search of Medina’s residence uncovered a cache of weapons and explosive materials: 32 firearms including rifles, pistols, shotguns, and antique firearms; 9,000 rounds of various ammunition; firearm parts; a Glock switch device; books on building firearms and explosives; shrapnel accessories like BBs and ball bearings; fireworks containers; and powders like potassium chlorate and aluminum powder linked to the explosion.

Medina's previous conviction for assault and battery in Lawrence District Court in 2002 prohibits him from possessing firearms or explosives. He faces significant penalties: up to 15 years for firearm possession as a felon, up to 10 years each for illegal possession of a machine gun and explosives, along with fines reaching $250,000 per charge.

The announcement was made by United States Attorney Joshua S. Levy and James M. Ferguson from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives' Boston Field Division. The North Andover Police Department, Massachusetts State Police, and Essex County District Attorney’s Office provided valuable assistance in the case. Assistant U.S. Attorney Luke A. Goldworm is prosecuting.
