Charleston man sentenced to five years for federal gun crime

Roger Wayne Legg, a 33-year-old resident of Charleston, West Virginia, has been sentenced to five years in prison followed by five years of supervised release. This sentence is for carrying a firearm during a drug trafficking crime.

Court documents reveal that on September 20, 2023, Legg was found with approximately 694 grams of methamphetamine and a loaded Diamondback DB380 .380-caliber pistol in his backpack while in Charleston. Legg admitted his intention to distribute the methamphetamine and stated he carried the firearm for protection during drug sales.

United States Attorney Will Thompson announced the sentencing and praised the investigative efforts of the Charleston Police Department-Special Enforcement Unit and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF).

The sentence was imposed by Senior United States District Judge John T. Copenhaver, Jr., with Assistant United States Attorney Alexander A. Redmon prosecuting the case.

This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), an initiative aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence through collaboration between law enforcement agencies and communities. The Department launched a strategy on May 26, 2021, to enhance PSN by focusing on trust-building within communities, supporting organizations that prevent violence, setting strategic enforcement priorities, and measuring outcomes.
