U.S. Attorney Alison J. Ramsdell | U.S. Department of Justice
A Rapid City man has been sentenced to nine years in federal prison for illegal firearm possession. U.S. District Judge Camela C. Theeler delivered the sentence to Charles Colhoff, aged 36, on December 11, 2024. In addition to the prison term, Colhoff will serve three years of supervised release and must pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.
Colhoff was indicted by a federal grand jury in February 2024 and pleaded guilty on October 3, 2024. His conviction stems from an incident on November 4, 2023, where he was involved in a shooting following an argument in Rapid City. During this incident, Colhoff exchanged gunfire with another individual who sustained two gunshot wounds requiring surgery. Law enforcement recovered three 9mm cartridge casings at the scene and later found Colhoff with a Browning 9mm semi-automatic pistol believed to be used during the shooting. Ballistics tests confirmed that the casings were fired from this weapon.
Colhoff's prior federal felony offense prohibited him from possessing firearms. This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), an initiative aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence through collaboration between law enforcement and communities.
The investigation was conducted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the Pennington County Sheriff's Office, and the Rapid City Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Benjamin Patterson prosecuted the case.
Following his sentencing, Colhoff was taken into custody by the U.S. Marshals Service.
