The governments of several countries and organizations have issued a joint statement on Syria following a meeting at the Aqaba Joint Contact Group ministerial. The statement, released by the United States, the Arab Contact Group on Syria, Bahrain, France, Germany, Qatar, Türkiye, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom, the European Union, and the UN Special Envoy for Syria, outlines their collective stance on recent developments in Syria.
The participants emphasized their support for "the Syrian people at this critical point in their history to build a more hopeful, secure and peaceful future." They expressed a commitment to principles they believe serve the interests of both Syrians and the international community. These include a Syrian-led political process based on UN Security Council resolution 2254 that results in an inclusive government formed through transparency.
The statement also reaffirmed support for "Syria’s unity, territorial integrity and sovereignty," while stressing respect for human rights. It highlighted the need to preserve state institutions providing essential services to Syrians and called for unhindered humanitarian aid access. Additionally, it demanded protection for foreign diplomatic facilities and personnel and advocated for accountability concerning regime prisons.
Participants underscored that adherence to these principles will be crucial moving forward. They noted that Syria now has an opportunity to end its isolation and pledged support during this transition.
The joint statement also addressed security concerns by emphasizing "the importance of combating terrorism and extremism" and insisted that Syrian territory should not threaten other countries or harbor terrorists. Furthermore, they called for all parties involved in Syria to cease hostilities while respecting its sovereignty as per UN Charter principles.
