The U.S. Department of Labor has announced a grant of $601,782 to the Kansas Local Workforce Investment Area III Inc. This funding aims to support employment and training services for workers affected by upcoming layoffs at General Motors. The layoffs are expected to occur between November 2024 and January 2025.

The Employment and Training Administration, part of the Department of Labor, oversees the National Dislocated Worker Grant program. This grant will enable Kansas Local Workforce Investment Area III Inc. to offer retraining and skills development services to dislocated workers in Jackson, Johnson, Leavenworth, and Wyandotte counties.

"The Employment and Training Administration is committed to ensuring Kansas workers laid off by General Motors have access to employment services," stated Assistant Secretary for Employment and Training José Javier Rodríguez. "This Dislocated Worker Grant provides critical support to Kansas by providing employment and training services to workers displaced by the layoffs."

National Dislocated Worker Grants are supported by the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act of 2014. These grants provide funding for direct services in areas facing significant economic disruptions that lead to workforce needs surpassing available resources.
