Federal agencies respond to increased drone sightings across northeast US

ORGANIZATIONS IN THIS STORY

More than one million drones are registered with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in the United States, with thousands operating commercially, recreationally, and for law enforcement purposes daily. The number of drones is expected to rise as technology advances.

The FBI has received over 5,000 reports of drone sightings recently, generating around 100 leads. The federal government is aiding state and local officials in investigating these reports. According to a joint statement from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), FBI, FAA, and Department of Defense (DoD), "consistent with each of our unique missions and authorities," efforts are underway to prioritize these leads using advanced detection technology and trained visual observers.

Upon examining technical data and citizen tips, it was determined that the sightings included lawful commercial drones, hobbyist drones, law enforcement drones, manned aircraft such as fixed-wing planes and helicopters, as well as stars mistakenly identified as drones. No anomalies have been found that pose a national security or public safety risk in New Jersey or other northeastern states.

Despite this assessment, concerns persist among communities. The federal agencies continue to support local authorities with detection technology and law enforcement assistance. They also urge Congress to pass counter-UAS legislation to expand current counter-drone measures for identifying potential threats.

Additionally, there have been limited drone sightings over military facilities in New Jersey and elsewhere within restricted airspace. While not new occurrences near DoD installations, unauthorized access is taken seriously by the DoD which coordinates closely with relevant authorities. Local commanders are engaged in ensuring appropriate detection and mitigation strategies are implemented.
