A man from Council Bluffs has been sentenced to 120 months in federal prison for a drug-related charge. Kyle Robert Smith, aged 31, was found with a significant quantity of methamphetamine in April 2024. Following his arrest, Smith instructed an associate to retrieve and sell two pounds of methamphetamine. Additionally, in March 2024, he was discovered with a loaded handgun despite being prohibited from firearm possession due to a prior domestic violence conviction.
Upon completing his prison sentence, Smith will serve five years under supervised release as there is no parole available in the federal system.
The announcement was made by United States Attorney Richard D. Westphal from the Southern District of Iowa. The investigation involved several agencies including the Southwest Iowa Narcotics Enforcement Task Force, Pottawattamie County Sheriff’s Office, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and the Council Bluffs Police Department.
This case falls under Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), an initiative that unites law enforcement at all levels with communities to reduce violent crime and gun violence while enhancing neighborhood safety. The Department of Justice launched a strategy on May 26, 2021, aimed at reducing violent crime by strengthening PSN through fostering trust within communities and supporting organizations that work towards preventing violence.
