Gregory L. Thorpe, Jr., a 28-year-old resident of Carmel, Indiana, has been sentenced to 84 months in prison by United States District Court Chief Judge Holly A. Brady. This sentencing follows Thorpe's guilty plea to making a materially false and fictitious statement during the acquisition of a firearm, as announced by United States Attorney Clifford D. Johnson.
Following his prison term, Thorpe will be subject to three years of supervised release. The case documents reveal that in the summer of 2021, Thorpe purchased a handgun from a licensed firearms dealer and attempted other firearm purchases while providing false information about his residence. In May 2022, during a traffic stop in Hendricks County, authorities recovered one of the firearms from the trunk of his vehicle along with 2.9 kilograms of fentanyl pills.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives led the investigation into this case with assistance from the Hendricks County Sheriff Department and the Plainfield Police Department. Assistant United States Attorney Stacey R. Speith prosecuted the case.
This legal action is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), an initiative that collaborates with various levels of law enforcement and communities to reduce violent crime and gun violence while enhancing neighborhood safety. On May 26, 2021, the Department introduced a strategy to strengthen PSN based on principles such as fostering community trust and legitimacy, supporting organizations that prevent violence proactively, setting focused enforcement priorities strategically, and measuring outcomes effectively.
