A Montgomery man has been sentenced to 16 years in prison following federal drug and gun convictions. Acting United States Attorney Kevin Davidson announced the sentencing of David Lee Johnson III, aged 38, on December 3, 2024. Johnson received a sentence of 192 months in prison and will serve five years of supervised release after his incarceration. The federal system does not allow for parole.
Court records reveal that on April 27, 2022, officers from the Montgomery Police Department observed Johnson near Zelda Road. Upon seeing the officers, Johnson fled to a trash enclosure behind a restaurant and exited shortly thereafter. Inside the enclosure, officers discovered a firearm and various drugs, including methamphetamine. When Johnson attempted to leave the scene by vehicle, officers conducted a traffic stop during which he admitted possession of the gun and methamphetamine. Due to previous felony convictions, Johnson is prohibited from possessing firearms or ammunition.
On September 4, 2024, Johnson pleaded guilty to charges of possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute and being a felon in possession of a firearm. During sentencing, the judge highlighted Johnson's extensive criminal history and noted the detrimental impact methamphetamine has on communities.
The case was investigated by the Montgomery Police Department and Drug Enforcement Administration and prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Justin L. Jones.
