He faces a potential sentence ranging from seven years to life in federal prison. In the Regions Bank robbery in Smyrna, Carney and Ewing stole over $15,000.
Acting United States Attorney Thomas J. Jaworski stated: “This sentence sends another strong message to those who commit violent crimes in our district that we will prosecute these cases to the fullest extent of the law.” He added that "the community will be now safe from this defendant for decades," expressing gratitude for the collaboration with various law enforcement agencies across middle Tennessee and northern Alabama.
The investigation involved several agencies including the Federal Bureau of Investigation's Nashville Field Office; the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives; police departments from Metropolitan Nashville, Murfreesboro, Ardmore, Greenbrier, Smyrna; and Moulton Police Department in Alabama.
