U.S. Attorney Gregory J. Haanstad | U.S. Department of Justice
A San Antonio man has been sentenced to 20 years in federal prison for the receipt of child pornography. United States Attorney Gregory J. Haanstad announced that on November 19, 2024, Bobby E. Matjeka, aged 43, received his sentence from Senior United States District Judge William C. Griesbach.
Court records reveal that Matjeka engaged online with a woman from Appleton and encouraged her to send him sexually explicit images of her then 8-year-old daughter. Over approximately one year, he participated in online exchanges concerning the rape and sexual abuse of the woman's children. Matjeka continued receiving images of the child and planned to install hidden cameras in her home to remotely view the abuse.
Judge Griesbach described the offense as “deplorable and despicable.” He highlighted the significant impact of Matjeka's actions on the victims. The judge decided on a sentence of 240 months in federal prison, considering it fair and just given the crime's severity and consistent with a sentence previously imposed on the victims' mother. After serving his prison term, Matjeka will undergo 15 years of supervised release and must register as a sex offender under state and federal law.
This case is part of Project Safe Childhood, an initiative by the U.S. Department of Justice launched in May 2006 to combat child sexual exploitation and abuse. The project involves collaboration among federal, state, and local resources to locate, apprehend, prosecute offenders exploiting children via the Internet, and rescue victims.
The Wisconsin Department of Justice’s Division of Criminal Investigations led this case's investigation alongside assistance from the Appleton Police Department and Homeland Security’s Milwaukee and San Antonio Field Offices.
Assistant United States Attorney Daniel R. Humble prosecuted this case.
