United States Attorney Alison J. Ramsdell has announced the sentencing of a Rapid City man for illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition. U.S. District Judge Camela C. Theeler sentenced Jordan Running Hawk, 21, to three years and one month in federal prison, followed by three years of supervised release. Running Hawk was also ordered to pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.

Running Hawk was indicted by a federal grand jury in June 2024 for Possession of a Firearm and Ammunition by a Prohibited Person and pleaded guilty on September 12, 2024.

The incident leading to his arrest occurred in April 2024 when an officer from the Rapid City Police Department stopped Running Hawk's vehicle. During the stop, it was discovered that he possessed a firearm and a magazine loaded with 31 rounds of ammunition. When questioned about the firearm, Running Hawk attempted to flee but was quickly apprehended and arrested. He is prohibited from possessing firearms due to a prior felony conviction.

This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), an initiative aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence through collaboration between law enforcement agencies and communities. On May 26, 2021, the Department launched a strategy under PSN focusing on fostering community trust, supporting violence prevention organizations, setting strategic enforcement priorities, and measuring outcomes.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives along with the Rapid City Police Department conducted the investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorney Benjamin Schroeder prosecuted the case.

Running Hawk has been remanded into custody by the U.S. Marshals Service.
